Hair By Sebastian Professional at the New York Fashion Week

We have featured face charts of models' makeup during the NY Fashion Week, but have you ever wondered who does all those amazing hairstyles? Inside scoop from Sebastian Professional will give us a lowdown on how cutting edge hair styles from the NY Fashion Week were created. I've known and liked Sebastian Professional's products since around nine years ago when I used their hair clay that sculpts hair and gives a piecy look with a matte texture that I love. Sebastian Professional's products were again at the forefront of fashion shows when they were used on the models' hair during the NY Fashion Week. Last month, the Sebastian Professional stylist team, under the leadership of the great Thomas Dunkin, created three amazing looks for the Catherine Holstein, Charlotte Ronson, and Diego Binetti shows for Fall ’09 Fashion Week in NYC. Five stylists were hand-picked by Sebastian for their ability to represent the brand and the designers’ inspirations. In this entry, we shall focus on the Charlotte Ronson Show.
CHARLOTTE RONSON FALL ’09 – February 13th

Inspiration:
Charlotte Ronson’s Fall ’09 beauty look is inspired by the combination of bold, serious ‘40s glamour with a rocker femininity that speaks to the consistent playfulness of the designer.
The Hair Look:
To keep this severe ponytail from looking too harsh, Sebastian Professional lead stylist, Thomas Dunkin juxtaposed a taught sleekness over the crown of the head with a natural texture at the back half of the ponytail for an interesting exit. Thomas ironed the first third of hair pin straight and misted a shimmer complex over the top of the head to create a surface shine that dramatizes the smoothness of the hair. Once combed back to a taught ponytail, the hair on the top of the head was smoothed with a shine spray and ultra-firm holding spray to control the look.

Inspiration:
Through crisis, moments of creativity emerge to nurture the spirit and provide escapist relief from the harsh reality. For her fall 2009 collection, Catherine Malandrino has drawn on the Surrealist movement, which emerged in the 1930s after “Black Thursday” as a way for artistic ingenuity to uplift the community and inject life back into society. The new Malandrino collection is inspired by the colors of Surrealism, as well as the mood and feelings portrayed by the movement itself.
The Look:
To achieve this Surrealist inspired look, Malandrino, Odile Gilbert, and Eva Scrivo collaborated for an end result both unexpected and curious—alluding to the artists of this era. A sleek, sophisticated chignon pushes the creative envelope when crafting multiple shapes, while colored extensions and netting add dimension and life to make this updo anything but typical. “The colored extensions themselves are a beautiful intermingling of light to dark tones, which we will customize for a unique look on each model,” says Odile. "It's modern art without being pretentious.”
Style: Step-by-Step
1. Prepare hair with Shine Define to protect hair from hot tools used during styling and also leave a shinier finish.
2. Tightly comb up hair to the front/top of the head into one ponytail; spray with Sebastian Professional hair spray: Shaper Zero Gravity as you comb, then Re-Shaper to hold.
3. Separate the models’ hair (if long) into three sections.
4. Using extensions, create three-four chignons interweaving pieces from the models’ real hair.

3. Colorist should begin by sectioning off the top of the head and clip out of the way. Working in horizontal sections around the head, they should use a combination of highlight and lowlight tones and paint vertically down the hair shaft.
