My Makeup Vanity Set-Up With DIY Lighted Mirror
Thursday, March 15, 2012
I've been dropping one-liners about my makeup studio in-the-making for the past few weeks. We converted a spare bedroom in our house into my makeup studio/office where I will be storing all my makeup and nail polish, and of course this is also the place where I'll be doing my makeup. I wanted a standard desk where I can fit many makeup staples that I will be using, and the rest of the makeup will be kept in my Ikea Hopen chest and dresser. The room is definitely not yet complete, but I did post about my makeup storage system using the Ikea Hopen 6-drawer chest and 8-drawer dresser.
I really wanted a huge mirror with lightbulbs around it for that amazing lighting that would make applying makeup a very pleasant (and easy on the eyes) experience. However, my DIY/handyman of a husband scoffed at the idea of buying such makeup mirrors online for $300 to $400 a piece. He said he can make something like that (if not better) for a lot less. He's a woodcraft hobbyist and a handyman, and he's made several of our garage cabinets and storage systems, so I believed him when he said he could make something like that. We bought the bulbs, mirror, bulb strips and the desk itself from IKEA. He got a strong kind of wood from Home Depo and measured and cut it around the mirror. He painted the wood black and installed the light strips. We got 7w bulbs from IKEA and plugged them into the light strips.

With the tired handyman and his project - almost done!

Makeup and Nail Polish Collection and Storage: Sneak Peek Into My Makeup Room in-the-Making

Here's a sneak peek into my makeup room that's still in the works, but I am very excited to see the final result.
But before that, here's a little history and peek into my old makeup storage system.
Six years ago, here's what my little makeup vanity/dresser looked like:

Very simple, eh? It's a hardwood dresser with eight drawers. I never thought I would outgrow this piece, as it is very beautiful and the wood finish is gorgeous. However, I have to admit, my growing stash just can't fit in this beautiful piece anymore. This will stay in our bedroom as a storage for clothes and whatnot. My new vanity and storage units will be in the new studio just a few steps along the hallway.
Here were the items that were contained in that hardwood dresser:
I placed my lip products in several of these:

My Blush Collection and Storage
Thursday, May 19, 2011
Here is my blush collection that I've accumulated for the past few years. Take note that a big percentage of my stash (around 70%)I had bought myself (I was/am a MAC MSF collector from way back), and the rest were press samples. This post is put up just to show you how I store my stash. I will be paring this down very soon as I need more space.
I went to Target one day and I saw these 3-compartment trays that fit my compacts perfectly. I bought two and I am so glad I did because they also fit in the blush drawer of my 8-drawer vanity. They look very organized instead of them being in a box piled one on top of the other. This way, I can easily see and use the blush or mineralize skinfinish I will use for that day.

SOHO Beauty Case Review
Wednesday, November 3, 2010
I have way too many products that I sometimes don't know how to organize them either for storage or travel. I do have an existing traincase, but it looks dingy as it is already old and really not of good quality. That's why I was especially happy to try out the Squared Large traincase from SOHO Beauty Cases called Diamond In The Rough, as it is in that shiny classic silver color for train/beauty cases. It looks very professional and yet trendy enough for budding young makeup gurus to use.

My Lipstick and Lipgloss Collection 2010

NOTE: This is a collection post. If you are easily offended by makeup collections, please do not read further. Thank you =)
I finally had to reorganize my stash because I was rotating only 2-3 lipsticks and the same amount of glosses daily, and I KNEW I had more than that. LOL Anyways, the products are not yet arranged according to shade, but I segregated the lipglosses from the lipsticks and placed them in pails. The pails were bought at Target years ago, and the metal round utensil containers were bought at Ikea. I placed all my MAC Dazzleglasses and Superglasses in that container because it's taller and it makes these kinds of longer glosses easier to spot. Most of these are MAC, about 95%. The rest are Estee Lauder lippies (love the formula), mineral makeup companies' lipglosses and lipsticks, some drugstore ones.
These pails (8 of them) are stored in one of the drawers of my hardwood makeup dresser where all my makeup is stored. It has 8 drawers and they are honestly getting pretty full. I have pruned these by tossing the old, rancid ones, so these are all fresh and still usable. I know I can't use these all, so I am giving some away to family, friends and household help of my parents.

Organizing My Mineral Makeup
Thursday, January 8, 2009
Maybe some of you are wondering how I store all my makeup. I have an 8-drawer (I'd thought all along there were 10) hardwood dresser that DH bought for me to store my makeup. I wasn't exactly jumping for joy when he bought it, because it meant that I had to store my makeup in the bedroom and not the bathroom, and I was enjoying applying makeup in the bathroom because natural light floods through easily because one wall is entirely made of glass. However, DH had the gift of foresight, I admit, because with my makeup collection as it is today, there is no way it would have fit inside our bathroom.

Two years ago, here is what the countertop looked like. I only had three of those small sterilite drawers, and those were the only brushes I had. Now I have seven of those drawers on top of the dresser. I miss how small my makeup collection was then - it looked so easy to maintain.
Anyways, I'd accumulated a lot of little mineral shadow jars and mineral samples that I had to devise a way to store all of them. I have this magnetic photo album that I slap the little baggies on and cover them with the provided plastic. I arrange them according to colors and it's great that you can see all the colors in one go so you can choose eyeshadow or blush combinations easily.

As my sample collection grew, I slowly ran out of space in my magnetic photo album. Also, on some days, I find the album cumbersome as on busy days, I don't have time to flip through the pages to choose my colors.

I discovered this stackable plastic craft containers with handles at Target that have those little compartments, and I think it works best for me because I get to organize the products into those little squares and segregate them according to use - I separate glows, blushes, shadows and foundations and place them into the little squares according to kind. Then when it's time to do makeup, I just flip the container open and sort them out by compartment.

These are the two tiers of plastic squares in my craft box. They can be stacked one over the other and flipped shut. It has a handle so you can tote it wherever you want to go.

For full-size jars, I found this neat craft box from Target that has two tiers of trays as well, and the trays on the top tier are removable. I bought a lot of these craft boxes and I arrange my jars according to brand/kind.

The upper and bottom tiers when the top trays are removed.

I then store these boxes in my dresser. The plastic squares where I store my sample baggies is the craft box on the bottom right. The craft boxes for full size jars are the top ones - I can hold ten of these in one drawer - eight stored upright and two on their sides.
There you have it - my mineral makeup storage system. This works best for me because I want to fully utilize my dresser, and I can work efficiently with this kind of system.

Craftstore Random Buys and My LaurEss Sale Loot
Thursday, July 10, 2008
I've had a few buys from my neighborhood Michael's (craft store) that I truly love. I use bead storage systems to store some of my mineral makeup, and I like browsing the bead section of Michael's to get my grubby hands on some nifty containers that I can use for my minerals. On another note, I also buy most of my home decoratiing stuff here, and most of my little boy's art supplies. We love Michael's! Here are some of what I got.

Here are some stackable jars (30g jars) that hold some of Dayna's Glows and her Rested undereye concealer that I transfered from baggies. These are labeled #1-4, when her Glows didn't have individual names yet. I really love these. I place it next to my tray of mineral foundations so I'd remember to apply them in the mornings.

It's a tin jewelry bead box that is very travel friendly as it comes in its own tin case. It's perfect for placing mineral pigments for travel.

Here's another bead storage system but with bigger containers for storing larger batches of foundation. It can also double as a MAC pigment jar.

As always, I wandered off to the painting supplies section and I was so happy when I found a few Loew Cornell Maxine's Mop brushes still on the shelf. These suckers have been out-of-stock for so long now, and I've gone to at least three Michael's stores, and every one of the branches had no stock of these. Probably thanks to the wonderful Koren of EnKoreMakeup, who has been telling us the virtues of buying these amazing brushes. I have shown these Loew Cornell brushes alongside with the MAC 239, and see how similar they are? They are both made of goat's hair that is perfect for application of lid color. The big difference is the price. The 239 is $24.50 each while the Maxine's Mop is only 5 or 6 bucks each. How neat is that? No wonder these are flying off the shelves!
I also went to next door store ULTA and got a few NYX eyeshadows. Before I became a MAC eyeshadow 'ho, I was a NYX addict. I had like 12 of the trios until I gave or swapped everything away. Now I realized there are some soft colors I needed that MAC doesn't have or I can't have because they are limited edition, so I got some NYX trios again (I used to have that Pinks trio too). I also got some lovely green/antique green eyeshadow singles that are pretty unique colors.

My LaurEss Loot

I was so surprised when I got my LaurEss sale loot yesterday. I mean, hello, it was just shipped the other day and I chose First Class shipping! I really appreciate Lauren of LaurEss for giving us U.S. residents the option of choosing First Class shipping for less than two dollars! There are only a few mineral makeup companies that offer First Class shipping, and LaurEss has the cheapest shipping fee I've found so far. In some mineral makeup sites, they charge between $5.50 to $7 per package. I don't need to get my package right away if the difference between Priority and First Class is only 2-3 days. But even with First Class shipping, I received my package amazingly quick.

My beautiful full sizes of Minimalist foundation. I am keeping my fingers crossed that one of these is my exact shade.

Lauren was so nice to give some Ethereal Samples in Soft and Pure Yellow and a gorgeous green shadow sample (bottom row).

My pretty matte blush samples. I chose mattes because I would be using them underneath my glows, illuminizers or MAC MSFs.
I can't wait to try these out!

Why I Should Stop Buying Lipstick
Monday, April 28, 2008
I have a 10-drawer hardwood dresser where I keep my makeup stash as well as some of my favorite personal items like back-up body butters, body scrubs, false lashes, perfumes and what-not. I keep my lipsticks and glosses in transparent drinking glasses in one of the drawers (making it look as similar as possible to the glass beakers MAC uses to store its tester lip stuff). As I trudged along my morning makeup routine, however, I noticed that the transparent glasses were getting harder and harder to use each day. I had to go through several glasses just to find the lipstick/lipgloss that I wanted. This weekend, however, I was shopping at Target with the whole family when I came across this at the dollar bin:

It's a tin pail that is as big as the pails used by toddlers for their sandbox activities. Underneath it, you can see my craft boxes holding my full-size mineral eyeshadows (that is an altogether different story, though - more of those in another entry). I figured since this has a bigger circumference/diameter, it can hold more lipsticks/glosses and thus eliminates the hassle of scrounging for lipsticks in different containers.

Hmm, this would work, I think. This holds part of my MAC lipglass collection. C-thru is sticking out of the pail because it just wouldn't fit anymore - but I wanted C-thru in this group, dammit! Yes, all are still fresh, wearable and still have the sweet vanilla scent; I chuck out rancid lipglass regularly.

Two pails of MAC lipsticks

Overflow of MAC lipglasses and non-MAC glosses (Lumiere, Aromaleigh, J.Lynne, Monave, and I think I see one Revlon)

My two lipgloss/lipglass pails

Closer look of the top pail: it holds my MAC eye kohls, some lipliners and overflow MAC and SN lipsticks
Ahh, these tin pails make my life so much more manageable! And yes, once you start needing pails to store your lip stuff, it's about time to stop buying lipstick/lipgloss. *thinks about MAC's upcoming collections and Silk Naturals' new glosses and slaps self*
