Green By Nature: Eco-Friendly Yet Affordable Beauty

Have you ever wondered why some supposedly eco-friendly products are quite expensive? Is it because it really costs a lot to be a little kinder to the environment? There are some all-natural products I see in the market that are a little too steep-priced for those with limited budgets especially in today's economy, but I am so glad I have stumbled on this amazing line of eco-friendly, natural products that won't break the bank. I also love that these are over 95% natural, and free of parabens, sulfates, DEA, petroleum, propylene glycol, sacchrine, dioxin, and phthalate. Best of all, these are really great products that work well and, take care of your skin and your environment at the same time.

Green By Nature sums up its philosophy below:

Green by Nature™ is an all natural bath and body care line, created with you and the environment in mind. All our products are over 95% natural, and free of parabens, sulfates, DEA, petroleum, propylene glycol, sacchrine, dioxin, and phthalate. Infused with beneficial plant extracts, essential oils and botanical essences, our line includes body lotions, body butters, body washes, body scrubs, lip butters and lip glazes, all in delectable natural flavors such as almond cocoa, mint green tea and banana shea. High standards are our core values. Each and every ingredient is carefully chosen, with health, environment and necessity in mind.

Every product is:
100% free of Parabens, Sulfates, DEA, petroleum, Propylene glycol, Sacchrine, Dioxin, and Phthalate

Why Paraben free? While preservatives in personal care products are necessary, all of them not created equal. Parabens, the most common preservative found in 95% of all moisturizers, gels and shampoos, are a suspected cancer-causing agent in women. All Green by Nature products are 100% free of parabens. Natural preservatives created from citrus fruits are used to keep our formula fresh and safe to use.

Why Sulfate free? Sulfates are a common chemical used in most cleansing products such as body wash and hand wash. It is a harsh detergent that strips away the skin’s natural protective barrier and causes irritations. None of our personal wash products contain sulfates.

Why DEA free? DEA (Diethanolamine) is a chemical frequently used in foaming cleansers to provide foam richness. It is believed that during the manufacturing process DEA can form cancer-causing nitrates.

We might ask: Why should I use natural skincare products?
We eat organic to avoid toxins sprayed on our fruits and vegetables, yet slather on body lotions and washes that contain equally harmful ingredients. The skin is your largest organ - take the same care as you do with the food you eat and use products that do not contain any harsh chemicals or potential toxins. A good rule of thumb: skip any products that contain parabens, sulfates, DEA, Phtalate and propylene glycol in the ingredient list.

Aren't all chemicals safe if they are sold in the US?
Consumers are unaware that the Food and Drug Administration does not regulate ingredients found in personal care products. Without any safety testing, it's unclear what the long-term effects of these industrial chemicals have on our body. Be confident and play it safe by using all natural ingredients that derive from the earth and are grown with sustainable resources.

How can the products I use affect the environment?
Not only are the harmful chemicals in personal care products affecting humans; they are also disturbing animals, their habitat and our environment. Contaminated water from soaps and shampoos are taken from sinks and showers and flow directly into our streams or rivers. Consequently, poor water quality and unhealthy marine life are a result of the daily choices that we make.

Fortunately, we DO have a choice. Green By Nature is here and they promise to use quality, earth-friendly ingredients and packaging in all their products. I have tried these products and I am amazed at how well they work, nothwithstanding the lack of chemicals that are in almost every commercially made personal care product. Best of all, they are affordable and are readily available at your neighborhood Target store.

Body Butter
Our body butter is a rich blend of beneficial natural ingredients. the effective formula moisturizes dry skin and helps restore its healthy vitality.
4.40 fl. oz.
$11.99

My take: The body butter is an assault to the senses: smells wonderfully of the purest scents found in nature, and it is also thick and emollient and does wonders on cracked and peeling, scaly skin. I love that it is a pretty hefty tub that will last you quite a while. An effective, 97.6% natural (heck, make it all-natural!) product for $11.99 - how can you go wrong?

Lip Butter:

Our lip butter is formulated with rich flavors and nourishing emollient oils. it maintains moisture and provides effective protection against chapped lips.
0.15 oz
100% paraben-free
$2.99

My take: Honestly, when I saw the prices of these products, I was amazed and pleasantly surprised. These are products from a company that strives to give the public the purest, most natural personal care stuff in the market, and yet they don't jack up the price just because they are supposed to be eco-friendly and chemical-free. For $2.99, the lip butter moisturizes my lips and makes it ready for my daily lipstick/gloss application, and makes them supple throughout the day as it protects them from dryness.

Total Body Scrub

Our uniquely formulated body scrub is full of natural and finely grounded exfoliates. It effectively and gently removes dead skin and grime, leaving the skin smooth and revitalized.

100% Paraben Free.
5.0 fl. oz
$9.99

My take: I like the subtle mint tea scent (you can choose from different scents like almond cocoa, banana shea and mint green tea), and this is an effective exfoliant to slough your skin of dead skin and dirt. It replenishes the skin with moisture and when I use them on my feet, the yucky, scaly skin is replaced with soft and supple ankles and soles of the feet. Again, take a look at the price! It is a pretty hefty tub with lots of product, natural, and most of all, affordable.

Body Lotion
Our nourishing, lightweight body lotion is ideal for all skin types. it is full of rich emollients that work gently to hydrate skin and lock in moisture. deliciously scented with natural ingredients, it is a perfect moisturizer for daily body care.

100% Paraben Free.
7.4 fl. oz.
$9.99

My take: It is indeed lightweight and less emollient than the body butter, but this is great during summer or for those who can't take heavy lotions or body butters on their skin. I honestly prefer the Banana Shea scent over the Mint Green Tea although both smell pleasantly of nature's by-products. I love to layer my Banana Shea lotion after I use my Banana Shea body wash.

Total Body Wash

Our all natural body wash is sure to add a refreshing zest to everyday showers. The gentle lather leaves skin vibrantly clean while the rich fragrance stimulates the sense for a luxurious aromatherapy experience.

100% Paraben Free.
100% DEA Free.
100% Sulfate Free.
7.4 fl. oz
$8.99

My take: I really like the pump design especially for those manic mornings when I can't be bothered with lids and flip tops. I pump two squirts on my bath puff and it effectively cleans my entire body. As I said, I love the wonderful banana scent.

Hand Cream

Our nourishing hand cream is enriched with vitamin E and aloe. A luxurious blend of jojoba, almond and avocado oils saturate the skin leaving it soft and supple.

100% Paraben Free
3.0 oz.

$8.99

My take: Love this...it has the right balance of emollient properties that effectively soothe dry, rough hands and cuticles, yet it is not greasy or sticky on the skin, which is good especially if you work with your hands all the time. It is also compact enough to place in your car's compartment, office desk drawer or purse.

All in all, this is a wonderful line of products that are eco and pocket-friendly, and are also quite effective. I highly recommend all the products I've tried. Maybe in time, they could add some more natural scent variants, but all in all, I loved everything.

MAC Cremesheen and Suite Array Swatches

Here are some swatches of the new released products from MAC. I will reserve my in-depth comments for later, but I love the new cremesheen finish of the new lipsticks. It is the new and improved amplified cream formula, so buttery smooth and uber-creamy on the skin, and pigmentation is amazing. The Suite Array are basically duos that are housed in MAC's slide palettes which they also use to package the Studio Finish concealer palettes. Do not be deceived by the swatches, though: I swatched the products a little too light on my skin, but pigmentation is actually pretty good. The Pearlglide liners are absolutely amazing. They are some of the creamiest liners I've ever tried. Pigmentation is so good, it took a whole lot of scrubbing to take off the swatches from my hand, and even after that, there were still tell-tale marks of the liners on my skin.

All-Minerals Look

I've thought of making an all mineral look, so here's what I came up with. I want to show that you can actually have an all-mineral makeup look, and it won't look washed out either. The only non-mineral products I used were MAC's Beige-ing shadestick, stick concealer, primer and mascara. Aromaleigh Rocks! Sonic eyeshadows are not 100% minerals, but I incorporated it in the look because they are mostly minerals anyway. Here's a step-by-step illustration.

Apply MAC Beige-ing shadestick on lids and browbone, smooth on brows. Blend with ring finger. Foil The She Space's Wasted Intrigue shadow on lid using MAC 239 shader brush (or any flat shadow brush).

Foil Adorned With Grace shadow in Rose Bronze on outer half of lid.

Apply Aromaleigh Rocks! Sonic shadow in Rock Bottom dry on crease and outer V using Sonia Kashuk crease/blender brush. Apply Adorned With Grace shadow in Malted Milk dry above crease to blend out harsh edges.

Wet-line Bare Escentuals liner shadow in Black Ruby on upper lashline. Apply Mascara and fill in brows. Apply Adorned With Grace shadow in Sheer Beige on browbone and inner corners.

Face:

Camellia Rose skin-smoothing primer V.2
DreamWorld mineral foundation in Theia and Amenti (Luna formula)
DermaBlend Quickfix concealer
Bare Escentuals Well-Rested on undereye area
Aromaleigh Ultra Resolution Finishing Powder in Peaches & Cream
LaurEss matte mineral blush in Persuasion
Dayna's Minerals glow #2 (discontinued) over blush
Valerie Beauty Starlet Glow mineral bronzer to contour

EG Minerals, Aromaleigh, and The Shade Of Me

First of all, let me say that Earthen Glow Minerals' online store is now open to the public. Their mineral makeup is top notch, and this is the first time ever that I found the ultimate perfect shade match in mineral foundation, maybe because I finally heeded the comprehensive color profile given to me by Jen of Camellia Rose. Jen (bless her heart) is the only person I know who does color profiling. I don't think she offers this service anymore, but early last year, I asked for her help in determining my exact undertones and she in turn asked me to send her a photo of me with no makeup under direct sunlight. I did and she used a special software to determine my undertones. She gave a lengthy explanation, but cut to the chase, she said that I have yellow with definite olive undertones. She further explained that the olive part is similar to the color of olive oil. I didn't really pay attention to the last part, but got shades that were in the golden or yellow range. While these shades did work, they were sometimes hit or miss. That is, until I finally understood what Jen's "olive oil" reference meant.

So I took the bottle of extra-virgin olive oil in our kitchen and peered closely for a minute or so. I didn't even have to look that closely, because it is as obvious as daylight that the dominant color you see in olive oil is - green!

It dawned on me that I have as much green undertones as yellow, that's why some yellow/golden-toned foundations look off on me. That is also the reason why Jen's color profile corresponded exactly with EG Minerals' description of my perfect shade, Janelle. It makes perfect sense now:

Janelle – A medium to light tanned Olive foundation for women with Olive complexions (green undertones) that also have some warmth or golden hues visible in their coloring. Ideal for women with medium Olive/Golden complexions of European, Latin, Indian, Medittarranean, Middle Eastern, Indian, and North African descent. Olive but with slight golden tones.

I couldn't fathom at first that I have green undertones, but it is what it is! Sounds weird, but it was the key as to why I have so many hits-or-misses with foundation shades. I was ignoring my green undertones altogether. After all this time, I have finally understood my shade. The shade of me. Ironic that this blog is all about shades and I have just fully understood mine. Amazing.

I am bent on getting my perfect shade with my other favorite mineral makeup companies as well, so I e-mailed Candace of Pure Anada and asked her if I can send a sample of Janelle so she can duplicate it in PA. She said she's always liked a challenge, so she is asking me to send over the sample so she can custom-make a shade for me in Pure Anada. I cannot wait!

So anyways, after all this rambling, I'm finally going down to the goods. When EG Minerals was still closed and the test site's cart was still down, I was bugging Michelle via e-mail if she could sell me a full size jar of Janelle and just invoice me by e-mail. She instead gave me a full size jar of Janelle and a slab of their Fruit and Honey soap bar as gifts! Thank you so, so much Michelle! You don't know how much I appreciate getting my full size jar from you, knowing of course that it's my perfect shade match. The Fruit and Honey soap bar smells heavenly and I can't wait to use it.

Can you believe how cute the pouches are?

My full size foundation in Janelle and Fruit and Honey soap

I also received my Aromaleigh loot after Kristen slashed the prices of her huge 10g jars of Pure Eyes Matte shadows by 50%. I got the big jars together with my samples of the Perle Powders that are beautiful glows/illuminizers and even blushes.

I've been liking the combination of matte shadows with shimmer shadows on my lids. The matte creates depth and it looks truly beautiful with the shimmer shadows as it tones down the over-all look and prevents me from looking like a disco-ball. Let me emphasize: truly matte shadows are better paired with shimmer shadows than satin (low-lustre) shadows as the contrast is beautiful, and you can see how well absolutely matte shadows complement the shimmery texture of the sparkly ones.

These are beautiful shimmery glows that are best used with a stippling or duo-fibre brush. I use it with Aromaleigh's special-shaped duo-fibre blush brush and it really works wonders. The brush deposits the sheerest amount of product on the skin, producing a lit-from-within effect. I love the brush so much! I will be featuring it in a future entry. The perle powders are beautiful as glows on top of blushes, or the darker ones can be used as blushes themselves.

Milani Nail Lacquers

I've featured several Milani cosmetics here on my blog, so you guys know that I am a fan of this brand. I've had the pleasure of trying out Milani nail lacquers. This is not the first time I've tried them. I've been using Black Cherry on my toes since last year, and it's a beautiful deep burgundy color that really makes the toes so pretty. I always wear open-toed heels and this color just looks sexy any way you look at it. What I didn't realize though that Milani carries a whole slew of colors to suit your style. They have an entire gamut of colors, from the classic neutrals to rich, vibrant jewel colors that take you anywhere from the boardroom to the beach to the bar. I also like that they don't peel off as easily as other brands, and since Milani is known for department store-quality cosmetics with drugstore prices, their nail lacquers are topnotch yet affordable as well.

Sorry for the sloppy application! It was hurriedly applied just to show swatches of the lacquers.

As you can see in the picture, the colors are definitely vibrant and the jewel colors are alluringly pretty. It also shows that the product doesn't streak and leaves an even coating on the nail surface. I hate nail lacquers that streak even when carefully applied. As I said, the products were hurriedly applied on my nails, and I have yet to see streaks.

I really vouch for this brand because I have been using it for quite a while and it is one of my favorite (if not the most favorite) drugstore brands. Do check out their entire selection of products. I will be featuring more Milani products in future posts, so stay tuned.

NICK GAVRELIS, VICE PRESIDENT DIRECTOR OF GLOBAL PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT, M·A·C COSMETICS ISABELLE ROVNER, DIRECTOR OF GLOBAL PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT, M·A·C COSMETICS

What makes M·A·C Mineralize different from other mineral brands?

M·A·C is the makeup authority and known for professional, stay-true makeup colours and textures. M·A·C has always used minerals in its makeup products, but the introduction of M·A·C Mineralize called for the development of special formulations
and innovative techniques. These new methods allowed us to create Baked, Loose and Fluid Mineralize Products.

Baked: Mineralize Skinfinish, Mineralize Skinfinish Natural, Mineralize Blush, Mineralize Eye Shadow
These formulas are free of traditional binders found in pressed powders and are baked for 24 hours through a unique process on terracotta tiles. The result is superb skin adhesion, pure colour, luminous dimension and a luxurious light finish.

Loose: Mineralize SPF 15 Foundation Loose
Many competitive mineral loose foundations can yield high buildable coverage, but with a more shimmery finish on the skin. M·A·C Mineralize Foundation Loose needed to be different. Our approach was to create a fresh-looking medium buildable coverage in a natural finish, but without the pearly shine. We also set out to have greater shade integrity; other mineral loose foundation shades that provide SPF coverage often have a greying of colour due to the active ingredients. We formulated M·A·C Mineralize Foundation Loose to offer the best of both worlds: SPF 15 protection with
true shade integrity.

Our “Caplicator” is also a unique point of difference. The built-in applicator puff allows for a more portable and less messy way to travel with Mineralize Foundation Loose. It also allows for flexibility – use with the Caplicator or a traditional makeup brush. M·A·C 109 and 182 Brushes are designed specifically to pick up just the perfect amount of product and give a beautiful precise application to face.

Fluid: Mineralize Satinfinish SPF 15 Foundation
The M·A·C Mineralize Satinfinish SPF 15 is a fluid foundation in a pump bottle that delivers a radiant, healthy look with a comfortable wear. The formula is rich in emollients, moisturizing properties and most importantly, minerals.

Mineralize Satinfinish Foundation SPF 15 gives a buildable low to medium coverage in a radiant natural-satin finish with UVA/UVB SPF 15 protection. The formula contains mica as the mineral source, which provides natural light-reflecting properties to give skin a soft, diffused appearance. It also contains Multimineral Complex IV, a water-based solution of Potassium, Magnesium, Sodium and Zinc, that helps nurture skin. Lastly, we built in an enzyme-protecting plant-derived complex, which including Beet Root Extract, Haberlea Rhodopensis Leaf Extract and Yeast Extract, to help moisturize and create a smoother, re-energized-looking complexion.

What is the baking process and what are the advantages?

M·A·C Mineralize Powders begin as a “dough” made from finely milled Sericite, Mica and Talc. This dough contains a special blend of 77 minerals that undergoes a patent-pending bio-fermentation process to create a yeast extract base. The formula also has Jojoba Oil, which gives it a creamy moist texture and helps hold the powder together.

These Mineralize products are carefully moulded onto special terracotta tiles and baked between 24 and 48 hours in a special oven. The powders are then cooled for 24 hours, during which time the terracotta tiles allow for the water in the formula to evaporate, creating the light, airy texture M·A·C Mineralize is known for.

No two compacts are the same. This is especially noticeable in some of the marbleized Mineralize Skinfinish Powders and Eye Shadows, as the marbleization is done by hand when the “dough” is being formed on the tile. The pearls in the formula are literally pulled through the dough to create this unique and beautiful effect.

Do M·A·C Mineralize products offer broad-spectrum coverage?

Yes. Specifically, M·A·C Mineralize Satinfinish SPF 15 Foundation and M·A·C Mineralize SPF 15 Foundation Loose.

Both Mineralize formulas offer broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection with SPF 15 and PA+(+) rating for Asia.

GORDON ESPINET, VICE PRESIDENT GLOBAL MAKEUP ARTISTRY, M·A·C WORLDWIDE

Q: Why is mineral makeup such a huge trend right now?

A: For a long time, women have wanted an alternative to the heavy powders and foundations that are on the market. They want their skin to be flawless but not made up and mineral products fit that need. We of course still have plenty of customers who cannot live without their full coverage, but that is why M·A·C is the makeup authority, we have something for everyone. It’s about having choices.

Q: Do you apply mineral makeup differently than non-mineral makeup?

A: Mineral makeup is no different than any other makeup when it comes to application techniques. The difference is in the final look. Mineral makeup provides a more natural appearance and always looks perfectly applied. As with all makeup, be sure that you choose the correct colours and begin with less product as it is easier to add product than it is to remove excess.

Q: For someone using mineral makeup for the first time, what differences can they expect to see from non-mineral makeup?

A: For someone who is using mineral makeup for the first time, the biggest difference that they can expect to see is the ease in application. Mineral makeup is incredibly natural-looking, it seems to blend itself into skin. M·A·C mineral makeup is also long-wearing.

Q: What are the differences between M·A·C Mineral Makeup and traditional mineral makeup products?

A: A point of difference with M·A·C mineral makeup is the variety of products that we offer – we are not just limited to powder foundations. M·A·C Mineralize meets everyone’s mineral needs with Liquid, Baked and Loose formulas. Each formula is rich with natural minerals that help nourish the skin. All M·A·C Mineralize products are dermatologist and opthamologist-tested.
